The best way to get started with cake decorating is to visit a hobby or craft store. Many of these types of store will have all of the supplies that you need. The first item that you will want to consider purchasing are cake molds. Cake molds come in all shapes and sizes, so if you are attending a birthday party, you will want to get a cake mold that would be appropriate for a birthday party. On the other hand, if you are attending a sweet sixteen party, you would want to find a cake mold that would be appropriate for that type of party.

After you have picked out the cake molds for your cake decorating, you will want to think about how you will want to decorate the cake. You will want to get a few icing bags and an assortment of tips. If you want flowers, make sure you get a flower tip. It is always a good idea to have plenty of star tip and straight tips. They can be used for all of your writing for the decoration of the cake.

Now that you have your tips, you will want to look at different colors for the icing. If you do not have any already, I would suggest buying an assortment. This will give you lots of options and even more options if you combine the colors that you have.

In addition to the coloring for the icing, you will also want to pick out some colored sugars and possible some colored gels that can also be used to decorate the cake. Again, if you do not already have some, it is a good idea to get an assortment.

Now that you have all of your supplies, all that is left is to go home and bake the cake. Once the cake has been baked and completely cooled, you can decorate the cake. Remember to practice on a sheet of wax paper before actually decorating the cake with the icing.
