Anything BUT Slumber

Any parent who has ever hosted a slumber party may well wonder how and where they got their name. The girls at a slumber party eat, and giggle and gossip and do a lot of things, but they sure do not slumber! Typically, they stay up all night, or at least until the wee hours. Especially for younger gals, it is necessary that the host parents come up with some games and entertainment ideas for the girls in the form of slumber party games. All night involves a lot of hours, and bored, tired girls tend to get more than a little fussy. While almost any party game that is age appropriate can be used at a slumber party, there are some fun games that are specific to the occasion. One is called “Sleeping Beauty”. Make a “bed” from a sleeping bag or a blanket and pillow on the floor in the middle of the room and have one girl lay down and pretend to be asleep. The other girls then say whatever they can to make Sleeping Beauty “awaken” (i.e. laugh). Do not allow touching – tickling is “no fair”. Whichever girl manages to wake Sleeping Beauty is the next Beauty. Another fun activity is to have each girl bring a sleeping bag. Zip the bags so that only the top is open and have a modified “sack race” where the girls have to hop (while in their bags) across a room or down a hallway. A version of hot potato can also be played with a pillow, stuffed animal, or other sleep related item. For slumber party games in the house, set up a scavenger hunt. Consider using glow in the dark sticks to to mark locations where things are hidden. If a slumber party is being held in honor of a birthday, favors or prizes are usually given to the guests. Slumber parties lend themselves to creative gifts and favors. Inexpensive flashlights, slipper socks and the like are popular choices for slumber party games. Nail polish and hair accessories are also a great ideas, because they lend themselves to fun activities such as group manicure or hair styling sessions. Allow the girls to have fun and be themselves, but be sure to guide the activities a little, so that every guest has a good time.
